What is Hateruma Island?

The name of Hateruma Island is said to derive from "the coral at the end of the sea (Uruma).

How to get to Hateruma Island from Ishigaki Island

There are three ferry services a day from Ishigaki Island, but they are often cancelled in winter, and if they are, you will not be able to leave the island, so it is recommended that you go when you have enough time in your travel schedule.

How to get around the island
If you have reserved lodging, they will pick you up according to your arrival time at the port.
If you are using a rental bicycle or bike, ask the staff at the store waiting for you at the port.
There is a microbus that goes to the village and the southernmost monument in Japan.

If you have the time and energy, you can tour the island by bicycle, but it is best to rent a motorcycle, as there is little shade once you leave the village and the hot summer sun can be harsh.

Sokina Tameike Observatory

A new observatory located right next to an agricultural reservoir.
The flat surroundings allow visitors to enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view.
The view of the stars at night is also beautiful, but it is dark at night, so be sure to check the location beforehand.
From the entrance of the circular road, follow the signs around to the ocean side to reach the observation deck.
Coral Beach (Urapina)

About 18 minutes by bicycle from the port.
The beach is located on the right side (ocean side) down a dirt road from a dead-end road, and is formed by many piles of corals.

Takanazaki (Japan's southernmost monument)

The "Southernmost Monument of Japan" was built in 1975 as a prayer for peace.

Hateruma Island Starry Sky Observation Tower, Taketomi Town
Japan's southernmost public observatory.A retractable astronomical dome with a 200mm refractor telescope allows observation of lunar craters and other features.The tower is located at the top of the tower. You can listen to the director's commentary on the starry sky on the roof of the tower. Astronomy fans from all over Japan visit the tower after sunset for guided tours of the starry sky and for astronomical observations through telescopes. From the rooftop, you can see the southernmost coast.
Hamasitan community
An area where the evergreen shrub Hamashitan (Mizugampi), said to be 100 years old, grows in clusters covering the rocks on the beach.
The contrast with the ocean is spectacular.
From here, a 5-minute walk along the coast to Kitagawa will take you to Paehama, a hole-in-the-wall beach.

Hateruma Brewery

A brewery that makes Awamori, "Awami", which is mainly sold on Hateruma Island.
Because it is not mass-produced and is difficult to obtain even for islanders, it is called "phantom awamori.
You can also find them in taverns and guest houses.
If you have any, please bring them back as souvenirs, as they will be appreciated.
Phe beach
Pae Beach is a hole-in-the-wall beach on Hateruma Island.
Hateruma Island is popular for Nishi Beach, which is crowded during the hot season.
On the other hand, La Pei Beach is not so crowded even during the hot season, so you can experience the atmosphere of a private beach.
The gradation of the ocean is so beautiful that you can enjoy just looking at the ocean from the beach, but you can also enjoy snorkeling because of the abundance of coral and tropical fish.

Monument to the Cenotaph for School Children
During the Pacific War, islanders were forcibly evacuated to the beach of Nanpuda on the east side of Iriomote Island.
Many of the evacuated islanders died of malaria.
The monument was built to prevent the tragedy that occurred to the evacuated school children from happening again.

Hateruma Post Office
Hateruma Post Office is the southernmost post office in Japan.
As on the mainland, it is only open on weekdays.

Nagata Jail
There are few shrines in Yaeyama, and Mitake is the sacred place equivalent to a shrine on the mainland.
Nagata Utaki is said to be the Utaki of Nagata Oyasama, a hero from Hateruma Island in the late 15th century.
Nagata Oshu was an island chieftain who, along with Oyakeakahachi, was one of the most powerful.

Hateruma Elementary School is the southernmost elementary school in Japan, and all Hateruma Islanders attend this school. Seven goats are kept in the school.

Buriuchi Park
Buribuchi Park was created in 1972 on the ruins of Shimotabaru Castle in the northern part of Hateruma Island.
The surrounding area is untouched and lush with tropical vegetation.
There are few private homes or tourist attractions in the surrounding area, making it a perfect place to relax and stretch your wings.
There are four benches in the park, so it is nice to relax.
Nearby are trees and stones of great variety, and the 3,500-year-old Shimotabara shell mound is reminiscent of a former settlement.

In the clean interior, you can taste the excellent food prepared by a former sushi chef from Tsukiji.

If you want to spend a relaxing time in Hateruma Island, please use this service.
Yutai is basically not very hospitable because it allows guests to stay as if they were living on Hateruma Island.
So you have a firm policy.

- Be careful not to step on coral. It may cause death or injury to your precious coral.
