What Is a Hamashitan Community?

"Hamashitan" is the name of a tree that grows by winding its large trunk around raised coral.

This Hamashitan grove contains more than 20 trees and has been designated a Natural Monument by Taketomi Town.

Among the Hamashitan communities, the large trees reportedly reach heights of 3.5 meters and have trunk circumferences of 2 meters, with some said to be over several hundred years old.

Next to the Hamashitan community is the Kezaki Coast, also known as “Coral Beach.”

How to Have Fun at the Hamashitan Community

The Hamashitan grove, designated as a municipal natural monument, is located in a hard-to-find spot, so be sure to ask a local for directions.

There are hardly any people at the nearby Kezaki Beach, so it feels just like a private beach.
