What Is Tsunami Oishi?

"Tsunami stones" refer to large rocks that were carried inland by a tsunami triggered by a magnitude 7.4 earthquake in 1771 (Meiwa 8), with its epicenter 40 kilometers off the southeastern coast of Ishigaki Island in the Yaeyama Islands; these stones still exist today and are scattered throughout various locations.

The “Tsunami Boulders” located within Sakihara Park in Ohama are said to be the largest of their kind, with an estimated weight of 75 metric tons. (However, recent research suggests they were washed ashore during a major tsunami that occurred prior to the Meiwa Tsunami.)

How to Have Fun at Tsunami Oishi

The massive tsunami boulder near Ohama Beach is located in a spot that’s truly astonishing—it gives you a sense of just how powerful past typhoons were.

There are also Jungle Night Tours and other events held here, where you can see “giant fruit bats” and “coconut crabs.” The Tsunami Rock is truly impressive when viewed at night, so be sure to check it out.
