1959年に琉球王府によって建設された、波照間島の中心にあるシンボル的存在の灯台。
2007年に年小笠原諸島沖ノ鳥島灯台ができるまでは日本最南端の灯台でした。
灯台の周辺にはサトウキビ畑が広がり、ヤギもいます。
撮影スポットとしても人気です。
島の中心地にあるため、レンタサイクルや歩いていくのもおすすめです。
