The observatory itself is basically free to visit without reservation. However, advance reservations are required for Ishigakijima Observatory's astronomical viewing events. It is recommended to check the schedule from the official website and apply early. Many star gazing tours also require advance reservations, so please check before your trip.
Many observatories, such as Tamatorizaki Observatory and the Observatory for Emerald Sea View (in Banna Park), can be visited freely at night. However, since there is little lighting at night and it is dark underfoot, we recommend that you prepare a flashlight and comfortable walking shoes. Management hours may vary depending on the facility, so it is best to check in advance.
Autumn and winter (October to February) are especially recommended when the air is clear. Visit an observatory far from the city center with little light pollution after 9:00 p.m. around the new moon to enjoy a clearer starry night sky. Summer (July to August) is the best time to view the Milky Way, but check the weather forecast frequently as the rainy season and typhoons can cause cloudy days.
Ishigaki Island is surprisingly large, so trying to visit all seven spots in a single day will leave you rushing around. You’ll have a more relaxed experience if you split your trip between the northern area (Tamatori-zaki, Hirakubo-zaki, and Mt. Nosoko) and the downtown area (Emerald Sea and Ishigaki Island Observatory), or if you narrow your choices down to three or four spots you really want to see.
Since most observation decks are difficult to reach by public transportation, we recommend renting a car or taking a tour. In particular, the Hirakubozaki Lighthouse, Mikazaki Lighthouse, and Nosoko-dake Observation Deck are spots that are difficult to visit without a car. If you’re uncomfortable driving at night, you’ll feel more at ease by taking a stargazing tour that includes round-trip transportation.
Since the views aren’t usually very good on rainy or cloudy days, we recommend checking the weather forecast and visiting on a sunny day if possible. On days when the weather isn’t ideal, you can make the most of your trip by combining your visit with the exhibits at the Ishigaki Island Observatory and other indoor attractions.
