国立天文台VERA石垣島観測局とは

名蔵ダムの近くにある国立天文台の関連施設です。電波望遠鏡は高さ23メートル、直径20メートルもあり、宇宙からの電波を受信し、銀河系の星の位置や運動を計測しています。

石垣市が開催する「南の島の星まつり」に合わせて1年に1回一般公開されますが、外から1年中見ることが出来ます。

VERA観測局の中で、日本の最南西（北緯24度、東経124度）にあります。

VERAプロジェクトとは、岩手県・水沢観測局、小笠原観測局、鹿児島県・入来観測局と4局で観測することにより、精密で立体的な銀河系の地図を作るという、壮大な計画！宇宙を少しだけ身近に感じられるかも？
