What Is Tachigami Rock?
Located in the northern part of Yonaguni Island, this mysterious spot features a massive rock standing in the sea—resembling a sculpture piercing the sky—that is revered as the “Rock of the Gods.”
Long ago, there was a young man who climbed this rock to collect seabird eggs but found himself unable to climb back down, andThere is a legend that says he offered a prayer to God before falling asleep, and when he awoke, he had returned safely.
There are two observation decks from which you can see Tachigami Rock: one is the old observation deck, located about 600 meters west of the Sanninu-dai parking lot, and the other is the new observation deck, built more recently about 500 meters further west. From the new observation deck, you can see Tachigami Rock up close. Since you’ll be leaning over the edge to look down, please be extremely careful on windy days! Also, while the new observation deck only has parking space for two or three cars, it’s relatively empty since there aren’t many tourists.
