About the Hateruma Island Star-Gazing Tower

A stargazing tower opened in 1994 on Japan's southernmost inhabited island.

It is a three-story building with a retractable observatory dome on the roof.

With no houses or other obstructions in sight, the conditions are perfect for stargazing.

It features a 200-meter refracting telescope and a planetarium, and offers guided stargazing tours in the evenings.

You can also see the Southern Cross from December through June.
