What Is Hikawa Beach?

Located on the southern side of Yonaguni Island, this unique beach is flanked by lush greenery to the west and steep cliffs to the east. Since it’s right behind Hikawa Elementary School, you’ll often see children coming down to play in the ocean when school lets out. The sandy beach is constantly cleaned by the islanders, and the beauty of the seawater is superbly maintained. Furthermore, the waters off Yonaguni Island boast exceptionally high clarity, thanks in part to the direct influence of the Kuroshio Current. This beach appeared numerous times in the TV drama “Dr. Koto’s Clinic,” and right next to it stands the drama set for “Shikina Island Clinic,” which served as the location for Dr. Koto’s clinic in the series.
