What Is Misakizaki?
A cape located at the westernmost point of Ishigaki Island.
The view of the vast, emerald-green sea stretching out from the sheer cliffs is breathtaking, and the Misaki Lighthouse stands at the tip of the cape.
In early spring, trumpet lilies and hill-blooming moonflowers paint the area white and pink, revealing a different side of the landscape.

Once you head down to the beach, you can enjoy activities like stand-up paddleboarding and snorkeling.
If you're visiting as a tourist, daytime is best—there are fewer people and the scenery is beautiful.
Because it is a cape on the western side, the sunsets are beautiful, and many people visit at sunset to watch the sunset over the remote islands.
How to Get to Misaki
Misaki is located about a 45-minute drive from New Ishigaki Airport and about a 35-minute drive from the Ishigaki Remote Islands Terminal.
Since it is located in the northwestern part of the Sakieda Peninsula—the westernmost tip of the island—we head north along the Ishigaki Port–Ihara route with Nagura Bay on our left.
Turn left as you enter the Sakieda area, and after driving straight for a while, On Kanzaki will appear on your right.
Since it's not very crowded, you can enjoy a leisurely drive.
Things to Do in Misakizaki
Located at the westernmost tip of Ishigaki Island, this spot is popular for watching the sunset. Many tourists come here in the evening to take photos. You can also see Kohama Island and Iriomote Island from here, so be sure to capture the perfect shot.
Mikamizaki Details

Misaki is the westernmost cape of the Yara Peninsula, located in the western part of Ishigaki Island, and is a scenic spot offering a beautiful view of the sunset.
The parking lot can accommodate about 17 cars, and since the area leading up to it isn't very crowded, you can enjoy the drive on your way there.
There are vending machines and restrooms on site, so you can relax and enjoy the scenery.
Because of its beauty, this cape is said to be a ”sacred place where the gods descend.”
To the north lies ”Sister’s Head Rock,” featured in a folk tale from Ishigaki Island, and in that direction is ”Manta Scramble,” a spot where you have a high chance of encountering manta rays.
During the peak season, you can often see dive boats and snorkeling boats heading out to the dive sites.
Looking east from the front of the lighthouse, you can clearly see Iriomote Island with the naked eye.
Since it is an island surrounded by jungle—often referred to as the “Galápagos of the East”—it is enveloped in lush, dense greenery.
To the south, there is a path that runs from the base of the lighthouse to the tip of the cape.

There are small hills covered in greenery and expansive white-sand beaches, and some people enjoy activities such as stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing.
As I mentioned, you can see Iriomote Island from here, but from the southern side, you can also see Kohama Island!
The path leading to the tip of the cape is unpaved, so you need to watch your step carefully. When you reach the tip, the waves crashing against the rugged rocky cliffs are truly spectacular.
I understand that its dynamic nature makes you want to take a closer look, but please be careful—peering into it is very dangerous.
In early spring, the area around the Misakizaki Lighthouse is blanketed in white by trumpet lilies.
The scent of lilies fills the air, creating a very pleasant atmosphere.
Although there are only vending machines in the area around Misaki and no restaurants, there is a popular spot called ”Ishigaki Island Fruit Land” about a 5-minute drive from the Misaki Lighthouse where you can enjoy juices and desserts made with tropical fruits from Ishigaki Island.
Since our main store is run directly by mango farmers, you can enjoy incredibly fresh, juicy mango juice and desserts.
Gelato and shaved ice on a hot summer day really hit the spot.
Enjoy some tropical fruit while feeling the pleasant breeze on the terrace!

Recommended Sightseeing Spots Near Misakizaki
Sakieda Beach

Sakieda Beach is a hidden gem located east of Misakizaki.
There are no signs pointing the way to this beach, and you have to descend a cliff from the paved road to reach the ocean, so it’s truly a hidden gem.
Since there are no signs or proper parking lots, hardly anyone ever comes here, so you can enjoy a sense of privacy.
If there are people around, there are often cars parked near the entrance to the paved road, so it’s best to check there before heading to the beach.
Because tour boats are often out on the water at Sakieda Beach, you can see them coming and going.

Osaki Beach

Osaki Beach is located south of Misakizaki, at the southwestern tip of the Yara Peninsula, and is the westernmost beach on Ishigaki Island.
Since it takes about 30 minutes by car from the city center or the remote island terminal, this beach is rarely visited.
This beach stretches out behind the site of the former telegraph office, which we’ll introduce later, and is a spot where the contrast between the crystal-clear sea and the white sand beach is truly beautiful.
Coral colonies thrive even in the shallows, providing a habitat for a variety of marine life.
That's why it's a great spot for snorkeling.
That said, since this is an unmanaged beach, there are no jellyfish-proof nets or lifeguards on duty, so please be careful!

Telegraph shop ruins

The site of the former telegraph office, located along the road from Misakizaki, is the remains of a telegraph office that was in use before the war; it is a structure that bears witness to the horrors of war.
As mentioned above, it stands right in front of Osaki Beach.
To get there, head north on Prefectural Route 79 from central Ishigaki Island along Nagura Bay. Once you enter the Yarabu Peninsula, turn left immediately and continue straight ahead with the ocean on your left.
After that, you'll see directional signs along the road, so just follow the directions to get there.
The site of the former telegraph office is officially known as the Submarine Cable Landing Station and was built in 1897 for military purposes.
This undersea cable connected Taiwan and Japan and was highly valued at the time. Although the surrounding buildings were severely damaged by attacks during the Pacific War, the site of the telegraph office remains.
That said, there are numerous bullet holes everywhere—on the ceiling, walls, and elsewhere—which serve as a stark reminder of the horrors of war.
