The Ishigaki City Traditional Crafts Museum is a museum where visitors can learn about the history of textiles, featuring many old exhibits and a distinctive red-tiled roof.
The Yaeyama Jofu textiles on display here may look simple at first glance, but their delicate craftsmanship actually exudes a sense of elegance. They’re incredibly comfortable to wear, which is why they’ve long been a favorite among the islanders. There’s a small sales corner on the second floor, so be sure to check it out.
Although it’s a little way from the city center, it’s definitely worth a visit because it features a large collection of traditional crafts from Ishigaki Island. The museum is filled with traditional crafts, and the walls are lined with photographs. In addition to the exhibits, you can also watch the traditional craft-making process.

 

Directions to the Ishigaki City Traditional Crafts Museum

The Ishigaki City Traditional Crafts Museum is located about a 20-minute drive from New Ishigaki Airport and about a [time] drive from the Remote Islands Terminal.
Leave New Ishigaki Airport and head south on National Route 390. Cross the Todoroki River and turn right at the seventh T-intersection. Continue straight along the road for a while, then turn left at the T-intersection and turn right at the dead end. Immediately after turning right, turn left at the T-intersection. Continue straight south along the road, and turn right at the intersection where you’ll see a goat meat processing and sales facility on your right. Turn left at the intersection where the Tomino-Okawa Line joins the road, then turn left at the intersection where the Industrial Road joins the road; you’ll find it on your right.

As its name suggests, the Ishigaki City Traditional Crafts Museum showcases traditional crafts related to the culture and history of the Yaeyama Islands, including Ishigaki Island. The museum features permanent exhibits of period kimonos, traditional looms, and materials related to Yaeyama Minsa textiles. Detailed exhibits and explanations are provided regarding the dyes used for Yaeyama Jofu and Minsā textiles, as well as the processes involved in their production.
You can see illustrations of the actual weaving process and watch a 25-minute video showing the production process. The gift shop carries a variety of small items starting at around 500 yen.

Turn right at the intersection where Route 390 joins, then turn left at the T-intersection after passing Amagawa Utaki. Turn right at the end of the road, turn right at the intersection with Ishigaki Beef MARU, and turn right again—Misaki Utaki will be directly in front of you.
Misaki Utaki is located in the downtown area of Ishigaki Island, so the path leading up to it is bustling with people, but once you step inside, the hustle and bustle of the city fades away, giving way to a mystical atmosphere. Misaki Utaki was built to pray for safe voyages and is cherished by the local community. Large trees line the entrance to the Utaki, creating a solemn atmosphere. In 1956, it was designated as a prefectural tangible cultural property.

To get to Ryukyu Glass · Glass Island from the Ishigaki City Traditional Crafts Museum, exit the museum and turn right. Take the second right and head south. At the intersection where Route 390 merges, turn left and continue east on Route 390; you’ll find it on your left.
Ryukyu Glass Glass Island is a long-established Ryukyu glass workshop with 28 years of history. Not only do they sell Ryukyu glass products, but you can also try your hand at making them. With such a wide variety of items, it’s fun just to browse. That said, you can make a piece in about 15 minutes, so be sure to stop by if you have some time. They also sell Ryukyu glass items for around 2,000 yen each and offer nationwide shipping, so please consider them for souvenirs!

To get to the Shinzen Ohama Memorial Museum from the Ishigaki City Traditional Crafts Center, exit the center and turn right. Take the second right and head south. At the intersection where Route 390 joins, turn left and continue west on Route 390; the museum will be on your right.
The Shinzen Ohama Memorial Museum was established to honor the achievements of Shinzen Ohama, a former president of Waseda University, who devoted himself to Okinawa’s reversion to Japan after World War II. The museum displays documents related to Okinawa’s reversion, as well as Shinzen Ohama’s famous quotes and maxims.
