About the Satake Yaeyama Palm Memorial Museum

Located near Yonehara Beach & Campground in the northeastern part of Ishigaki Island, this museum was erected in honor of Toshihiko Satake, a world-renowned authority on palm research who discovered the “Ryukyu Yaeyama Palm,” a species native to Ishigaki Island and other areas. The building suddenly appears amidst a dense grove of palm trees (lol). The museum features exhibits on Dr. Satake’s achievements, palm trees from around the world, and everyday items made from palm materials from various regions, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the Yaeyama palm. You’ll enjoy your visit even more if you learn about the Yaeyama palm here before heading to the nearby Yonehara Yaeyama palm grove♪

How to Enjoy the Satake Yaeyama Palm Memorial Museum

If you’re visiting the Satake Yaeyama Palm Memorial Hall, be sure to check out the Yaeyama Palm Grove in Yonehara as well! Since it only takes about 10 to 20 minutes to fully enjoy the walking trail through the Yaeyama Palm Grove, we also recommend visiting the Blue Cave, which is right nearby. It’s a great spot to explore the untouched interior of the cave. Also, be sure to try the sugarcane juice sold at the entrance to the Yonehara Yaeyama Palm Grove.
