Detail of hirugi community in Fuki-dori River

Fuki-tsuki-gawa is a 2.2 km long river originating from Nosodake, one of the most scenic spots in Ishigaki Island and famous for the legend of Ma-pei.
The Fukidori and Miyara Rivers are popular fields for river activities. Compared to the Miyara River, the largest river on the island, the Fukidori River is smaller and can be easily accessed upstream from the river mouth.

The area near the mouth of the Fukidori River is brackish water where fresh water from the river mixes with seawater, and mangroves, formed mainly by hirgi-plants, grow in clusters.
Most of the mangroves in the Fukidori River on Ishigaki Island are Yaeyama Hirugi, Ohirugi, and Mehirugi, which are designated as national natural treasures.
Hirudoaceae in the Fukidori River
Rhizophora mucronata (species of mangrove)

Yaeyama Hirugi is a member of the Hirugiaceae family distributed on some of the Yaeyama Islands, and most of the mangroves on Ishigaki Island are dominated by this species.
It is a tall tree, reaching several meters, with thick supporting roots that support the entire tree.
It sucks up brackish water, a mixture of fresh and salt water, from its roots and accumulates only the tide into its leaves until it reaches its limit, at which point the leaves turn yellow and then fall off.
black mangrove (Bruguiera gymnorrhiza)

The roots of the Ojirugi are shaped like knees, and they emerge from the surface of the water.
It is called "knee root" because of its knee-like shape.
Kandelia obovata (species of mangrove)

Mehirugi was named "mehirugi" in contrast to "ohirugi" because it has thinner roots and more beautiful flowers than "ohirugi.
It is resistant to cold and grows vigorously in winter, and can be seen north of Yaeyama.
white mangrove
Hirugidamashi is not a member of the Hirugiaceae family, but it is a mangrove plant that can be found in the Fukidori River.
Although not as abundant, they are highly tolerant of salinity and can be seen in small numbers in brackish water near the ocean.
As its English name, pencil root, suggests, it grows vertically from the sea surface like a pencil standing up.
