What Is the Urano Cemetery Complex?
The Urano Cemetery Complex is a vast collection of graves stretching from the north to the east of the Sonai settlement. The endless row of Ryukyu-style graves, large and small, has a somewhat eerie feel to it, resembling a "city of the dead." In the past, on Yonaguni Island, a practice known as “cliff burial” was carried out, in which the deceased were placed at the base of cliffs or similar locations. This gradually evolved into placing the remains in rock caverns and sealing the entrances with stones and earth. After undergoing various developments, the current “tortoise-shell tombs” became the standard practice from the Showa era onward. From location, orientation, and shape to dimensions, the principles of so-called “cemetery feng shui” are consistently applied.
