What Are Underwater Ruins?

A massive stone structure spanning several hundred meters in circumference, discovered in 1986 on the seafloor about 50 meters off Shinkawa-hana in the northern part of Yonaguni Island. Although investigations have continued from the time of its discovery to the present, various theories exist—including that it is a ruin of the lost continent of Mu, the remnants of an ancient civilization, or the result of tectonic shifts—making it a mysterious site shrouded in enigma. Many features—such as marks that look as if they were cut by human hands, passageways just wide enough for a person to walk through, stair-step walls, and holes that suggest pillars once stood there—appear to be shapes that could only have been created by human hands, giving the site a mysterious atmosphere that makes it hard to believe it was formed by natural phenomena. You can explore the site by diving or by taking a glass-bottom boat (semi-submersible). The glass-bottom boat tour, which includes one drink and round-trip transportation, lasts about one hour and costs 6,000 yen.
