What Is Nunu-Sha Beach?

"Nunu-sha," which means "to hang out cloth to dry," is the name of the beach north of the West Pier.

It was named after the tradition of soaking "basho-fu"—a traditional fabric from Taketomi Island—in this seawater in the past.

Since many sightseeing tours and other excursions follow a route that goes as far as the West Pier, it’s also known for having few visitors.

How to Get to Nunu-Sha Beach

Nunusha Beach is located about a 21-minute walk or a 6-minute drive from Taketomi Port.

Head straight from Taketomi Port toward the village.

Go past the Taketomi Island Bike Rental shop, then turn right at the intersection just past the T-junction.

Continue straight for a while, and when you see Hotel Peace Island Taketomi Island on your left, turn right at the second intersection.

Turn left at the T-intersection at the end of the road, then turn right at the next intersection, and you'll arrive.

How to Have Fun at Nunu-Sha Beach

This beach is a popular spot for locals living on Taketomi Island to visit for walks and other activities.

Although it’s a completely untouched beach, there are hardly any people around, so it’s perfect for those who want to take their time and enjoy Taketomi Island all to themselves.

Details on Nunu-Sha Beach

Nunusha Beach is a rocky beach located north of the West Pier; because it’s on the east coast, it’s also a popular spot for watching sunsets.

They were rinsing basho-fu, a traditional fabric from Taketomi Island, in seawater.

Since the local term for bleaching this cloth is "Nunusha," the beach was named Nunusha Beach.

This beach features unspoiled nature, and because it is completely unmanaged, rocky areas are visible here and there along the shore, and the sand itself is mostly coarse.

For this reason, to avoid injuring your feet, be sure to wear flip-flops or similar footwear rather than going barefoot.

As mentioned above, since this is a completely unmanaged natural beach, there are no facilities such as parking lots, restrooms, or restaurants, so be sure to take care of those needs beforehand.

Since it’s a spot that hardly anyone visits, the contrast between the crystal-clear sea, the sandy beach, and the lush greenery surrounding it creates a scene of exquisite beauty.

The path leading to Nunusha Beach is lined with dense, lush greenery. Since you’ll be walking along a wildlife trail where many insects are found, it’s a good idea to wear long sleeves and long pants and bring insect repellent.

The sight of the beach stretching out before you as the dense, lush jungle gives way to it is truly breathtaking.

With few tourists around, you can enjoy a private, leisurely experience.

Recommended Sightseeing Spots Near Nunu-Sha Beach

Nishi Pier is a disused pier located south of Nunusha Beach; it was designated as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2005.

Since Taketomi Island is not suitable for rice farming, this pier was built in 1938 to allow people to travel to Iriomote Island for work in the rice fields; it remained in use until 1971.

Although it is no longer in use, it remains a popular tourist attraction.

The pier jutting out toward the sea is made of rock and is very sturdy.

From the pier, you can observe the coral and tropical fish in the shallow waters; the white pier stands out beautifully against the emerald-green sea with its exceptional clarity, making this a popular photo spot.

In the evening, the sunset over the horizon is a popular sight, and once the sun sets, the sky is filled with stars.

It's within walking distance or a short bike ride from the village, so please feel free to stop by.

Kihoin Collection Museum

The Kibōin Collection Museum is a museum of history and folklore located within the village, east of Nunusha Beach.

Located adjacent to Kihō-in, Japan’s southernmost temple, the museum displays approximately 4,000 items, including art, crafts, and folk artifacts related to Taketomi Island.

You can learn a great deal about the history and culture of Taketomi Island, including the symbols used in the pre-literate era, warasan (knotted ropes), and the origins of the patterns found in Minsa weaving.

Neilan stone

Niran Rock is a legendary rock located south of Nunusha Beach. If you’re visiting from Nunusha Beach, be sure to stop by the West Pier along the way as well.

The word "Niran" in "Niran Stone” means “the land of the gods far across the sea,” and legend has it that the gods who visited Taketomi Island tied the ropes of their ships to this stone before coming ashore.

For this reason, a ceremony called "Yomukai" is held on the 8th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar.
