100 best roads in Japan

"Japan's 100 Selected Roads" refers to a list of 100 roads selected by the Ministry of Construction between 1986 and 1987 based on criteria such as historical significance, charm, aesthetic appeal, and accessibility.

The selected road was honored by the Minister of Construction and presented with a commemorative plaque.

As mentioned above, the roads selected for the “Top 100” list were chosen based on various criteria, including historical significance, charm, scenic beauty, and accessibility. They range from national highways with scenic views to steep, winding mountain roads and tree-lined avenues.

The Kuroshima Port Prefectural Road features landscapes representative of Okinawa, such as stone walls made of Ryukyu limestone formed from coral reefs and red-tiled roofs, and it was selected in part to preserve the scenery along this road. (Quoted from the “Japan’s Top 100” Data Book)

You can spot it right away because it’s a wide road leading from the area around Kuroshima Port to the village.

There isn't a single traffic light—it really feels like a typical Okinawan road.

As you drive along the road, you can see the oxen leisurely grazing in the lush, green pastures.
