What Is Narasa Beach?

A beach connected to Aiyaru Beach on the east side.

You can see the town of Ishigaki Island right in front of you—it’s a truly mysterious beach where, even though it’s on a remote island, you can still see the town.

Despite the stone-walled streets, the shallow sea stretches out before you.

While the neighboring Ayyar Beach is a popular tourist attraction, Nara Beach—despite being right next door—is a hidden gem because it’s less crowded.

Recommended for those who want to take it easy.

How to Get to Narasa Beach

Narasahama Beach is located about a 24-minute walk or a 6-minute drive from Taketomi Port.

We're heading from Taketomi Port toward the village.

When you see the Taketomi Island Bike Rental on your right, pass it and turn left at the first intersection.

Turn left at the next intersection, continue straight for a while, and you'll find Narasa Beach on your left.

How to Have Fun at Narasa Beach

If you head directly to Narasa Beach, you'll have to walk through a grassland area, so it's best to go via Aiyar Beach.

The contrast between the white sandy beach and the emerald-green sea is exactly what everyone imagines when they think of Taketomi Island—a place that’s brimming with that remote island vibe.

It's nice to just relax on the beach, and it's also nice to go swimming.

Details on Narasa Beach

Narasahama Beach is located on the east coast of Taketomi Island, and if you head south along the coastline, it leads to Kitocchi Beach and Aiyaru Beach.

Since this beach is located at the eastern end, you can see the town of Ishigaki Island across the water.

Depending on the season, the best spots to view the sunrise vary, so you can enjoy both sunrises—one rising from the horizon and one rising over Ishigaki Island.

Nearby, there are rows of houses with stone walls typical of the Yaeyama Islands, and the shallow, crystal-clear waters facing them make this the perfect spot for swimming.

As mentioned above, Ayar Beach and Kitocchi Beach are nearby and are highly recommended as tourist attractions.

That said, since it’s located away from the villages on Taketomi Island, there aren’t many tourists, making it a hidden gem of a beach where you can enjoy a sense of privacy.

It's the perfect place to spend some leisurely time with someone special.

Why not rent a bike and make the trip while enjoying a ride?

As mentioned above, Narasa Beach is located about a 12-minute drive or a 24-minute walk from Taketomi Port, and if you’re heading there directly, you’ll need to walk through an area of dense grassland.

For that reason, I recommend entering from the adjacent Aiyaru Beach, as you can go straight there from there.

Narasahama Beach offers a stunning contrast between its sparkling white sand and the crystal-clear, emerald-green sea, allowing visitors to enjoy the breathtaking scenery unique to a tropical resort.

Although it’s a shallow beach, fish swim right up close, so you can safely observe marine life.

Since you can see them even in shallow water, you can watch the fish with just a pair of goggles—even if you don't have a full-fledged snorkeling set.

Right next to Narasa Beach is Hoshinoya Taketomi Island, one of the largest resort hotels on Taketomi Island.

So, if you stay overnight, you can relax and enjoy the nearby beach.

Since Narasa Beach is also on the east coast, you can't really go for a proper swim there, but it's the perfect spot to take in the beautiful scenery or go for a leisurely stroll.

Since Kuninaka Utaki and Kumahara Utaki are also nearby, be sure to stop by those as well.

Recommended Sightseeing Spots Near Narasa Beach

Aiyal Beach and Narasa Beach are beaches that stretch to the south; like Narasa Beach, they are quiet beaches that are not often visited by tourists.

That's why it's the perfect spot to spend some time leisurely enjoying the scenery.

There are no large buildings nearby, and the beautiful ocean stretches out before you—its water clarity is among the best in the Yaeyama Islands.

Kitochi Beach

Kitochi Beach is located further east than Narasa Beach, at the easternmost point of Taketomi Island.

It is located halfway between Aiyal Beach and Narasa Beach.

Since this beach is located directly north of Ayar Beach, it’s a good idea to take a stroll along Ayar Beach and Narasa Beach as well.

Because the white sand at Kitochi Beach is so beautiful, it is said that the white sand from Kitochi Beach is the most suitable for use on the streets of Taketomi Island’s village.

Hanack On

Hanack On is the deity enshrined by Hanack Village on Taketomi Island, and one of the Six Mountains (Mūyama) that form the center of the Shinto rituals performed on Taketomi Island. As this sacred site enshrines Takindun—the tutelary deity of Hanakura Village—and deities invited from Okinawa Island, where the village’s ancestors originated, visitors are not permitted to enter beyond the torii gate.

Since there are almost no Shinto shrines in the Yaeyama Islands, including Taketomi Island, sacred sites called "Utaki" are used to enshrine the gods of Okinawa. There are 28 such sites on Taketomi Island; they are called “On,” while on other islands in the Yaeyama archipelago they are known as “Utaki” or “Otake.”

The origin of Hanashiro Utaki is recorded in the *Ryukyu Kokki* (History of the Ryukyu Kingdom), compiled by the Ryukyu Kingdom in 1713.
