The Nagura Bridge is renowned as the most popular sunset spot in the Yaeyama Islands.
The scenery along the coastline is outstanding, making it a popular driving route.
There are plenty of activities to enjoy, and you can see people participating in activities like SUP and canoeing.
Tours that let you watch the sunset are popular around Nagura Bay.
I also do yoga during the day while soaking up the sun all over my body.
Details on the Nazura Ohashi Bridge

The Nagura Bridge spans Nagura Bay, the largest bay on Ishigaki Island, and is easily accessible as it runs along Route 79.
Free parking is available, and there are stairs leading down to the Mangrove River.
Since the Nagura Ohashi Bridge is located at the western tip of the island, you can enjoy views of the sunset sinking into the horizon.
Because the air on Ishigaki Island is so clear, you can see beautiful sunsets.
In particular, the sight of the setting sun glowing green or gold just before sunset is known as the “magic hour” or the “green flash.”
You can only see it on a clear day, just before sunset, so be sure not to miss it.
The crystal-clear ocean, the blue sky, and the lush mangroves—all gradually turning crimson in the sunset—make for a truly breathtaking sight!
We hope you enjoy it.
In addition, just past the Nagura Bridge lies the ”Nagura Ampāru” wetland, which was designated under the Ramsar Convention in 2005.
There are four wetlands in Okinawa Prefecture that are listed under the Ramsar Convention, but this is the only one in the Yaeyama Islands and is known as the southernmost and westernmost site.
This wetland area is home to extensive tidal flats and mangroves.
It serves as a stopover and breeding ground for migratory birds, and on the mudflats, you can see fiddler crabs and rice-paddy crabs walking about, as well as mudskippers hopping around.
Mangroves, led by the Yaeyama mangrove—which is designated as a National Natural Monument—grow in dense stands along with other members of the Rhizophora family.
The area around Nagura Bridge, where you can experience such a diverse range of ecosystems, also offers SUP and canoeing activities.
I highly recommend the sunset activity! Cruising with the sunset as a backdrop makes for a truly picturesque scene—it’s sure to move you.
Please be sure to consider it.

Ishigaki Island Yaima Village

To get to Ishigaki Island’s Yaima Village from Nagura Bridge, head north from the bridge and turn right at the first Y-intersection.
If you follow the road for a while, you'll see Ima Village on Ishigaki Island on your left.
Yaima Village is the southernmost theme park in Japan, recreating the traditional streetscape of the Yaeyama Islands.
It is built on a small hill, offering views of beautiful sunsets and starry skies.
This traditional-style building with a red-tiled roof is registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property. Inside, visitors can experience Yaeyama culture through activities such as shamisen lessons, trying on Ryukyuan costumes, and painting shisa figurines.
You can also interact with animals throughout the park, including at the water buffalo pond, the crested eagle conservation enclosure, and the squirrel monkey enclosure.
Feeding the squirrel monkeys is especially popular. As soon as you hold out some food, a crowd of squirrel monkeys will swarm around you—you’re sure to be surprised!

To reach the Maise-dake Observation Deck, head north on Route 79 and turn right at the T-intersection where it meets Route 208.
Follow the road south for a while, and when you see the entrance to the Ishigaki Island Observatory on your right, turn right.
Turn left at the first Y-intersection and follow the road to arrive at your destination.
The Maise-dake Observation Deck is an observation deck built on Maise-dake, which towers south of the Nagura Bridge.
From the observation deck, you can take in a panoramic view of Ishigaki Island. Because it’s tucked away deep in the mountains, it’s such a hidden gem that even some locals haven’t heard of it.
Since this spot isn’t listed in guidebooks and often can’t be found using a rental car’s GPS, we recommend taking a taxi or using a map app to get there.
There's also a playground for kids near the observation deck, so it's a great spot for families with children!
