About the Taketomi Island Townscape Museum

The Taketomi Island Machinami Kan is less of a tourist attraction and more like a community center for the residents of Taketomi Island.

Designed with the surrounding landscape in mind, the building is a traditional red-tiled house consisting of a main house and an annex connected to it.

This facility features training rooms, social areas, exhibition spaces, and more.

How to Get to the Taketomi Island Townscape Museum

The Taketomi Island Townscape Museum is located about a 14-minute walk or a 4-minute drive from Taketomi Port.

Leave Taketomi Port and head toward the village.

Follow the road for a while, and when you enter the village and see the Taketomi Post Office on your left, turn right at the next intersection.

After turning right, take the second right at the next intersection, and you'll see the Taketomi Island Town Museum on your right.

How to Enjoy the Taketomi Island Townscape Museum

Although it’s not a spot that tourists typically visit, it’s quite convenient since it’s one of the few places on the island with restrooms.

If you get tired while renting a bike or taking a stroll, it’s a good idea to take a break in the shade.

It is a place of relaxation for the islanders, where they can unwind.

Because building regulations on Taketomi Island are strict, there aren’t many large structures there, which makes the Taketomi Island Townscape Museum stand out.

There are exhibits on Taketomi Island inside the facility, so if you’d like to learn more about the island, be sure to stop by.

Unless locals are using it, it might be closed, but it’s still worth stopping by to see the red-brick building.

Recommended Sightseeing Spots Near the Taketomi Island Townscape Museum

Nishitō Ontake

To get to Nishitō-On from the Taketomi Island Townscape Museum, exit the museum, turn left, and then turn right at the first intersection; it will be on your right.

Nishitō Utaki is a sacred site dedicated to Nishitō, a renowned figure from Taketomi Island.

Nishitō was recognized for his talents by a general of the Ryukyu Kingdom during the Okaya Akahachi Rebellion of 1500 and went on to pursue his studies in Ryukyu.

Thanks to his advanced civil engineering skills, he was entrusted with the design of the Shuri Castle walls, the construction of the stone gate at Sonohyan Utaki, and many other architectural projects.

After that, he became the Kashira and ruled the Yaeyama Islands from Ishigaki Island.

Because he was deeply devoted to his hometown, he was enshrined on Taketomi Island after his death, and his grave became what is now known as Nishitō Utaki.

East Paiser-shi Ontake

To get to Higashi-Paisa-shi Mitake from the Taketomi Island Townscape Museum, exit the museum, turn right, and then turn left at the intersection.

Turn left, then turn right at the next intersection, and turn right again at the following intersection; you'll see Higashi-Paisa-shi Mitake on your right.

Higashi-Paisaji Ontake is a very sacred vine tree said to enshrine the "god who creates and nurtures islands."

Although various sites within the village, such as places of worship and ceremonial grounds, are still cherished today, Ontake is considered the most important sacred site on Taketomi Island.

Taketomi Post Office

To get to the Taketomi Post Office from the Taketomi Island Townscape Museum, exit the museum, turn left, and then turn right at the first intersection.

Turn left at the second intersection, then turn right at the first intersection, and you'll find it on your left.

The Taketomi Post Office is the only post office on the island. It is characterized by its red-tiled roof edged with white plaster, and shisa statues—which ward off evil spirits—are placed on the roof.

It retains much of the traditional Yaeyama landscape and is surrounded by stone walls.

Some commemorative stamps are only available at the Taketomi Post Office, so be sure to check them out as souvenirs!
