Kurushima

What Is Kuroshima?
Kuroshima is a remote island located about 25 minutes by high-speed ferry from Ishigaki Island. The island’s most distinctive feature is that it is said to have more than 10 times as many cows as people. It is also known as “Heart Island” because of its heart-shaped outline. There are various beautiful beaches, including Nishi Beach—where sea turtles are said to come to lay their eggs—and Nakamoto Beach, Kuroshima’s most popular spot. The Iko Pier, located in the northern part of the island, was designated a National Tangible Cultural Property in 2005.
Things to Do on Kuroshima
One of Kuroshima’s most famous attractions is the Cattle Festival, held every year in late February. Organized to promote the livestock industry, the festival features a wide variety of traditional performing arts and other events, but the highlight is undoubtedly the raffle where you can win a whole cow. If you happen to be visiting Ishigaki Island around this time, you should definitely consider participating.
