About the Giant Banyan Tree at the Kuniyoshi Family Home

A large banyan tree located along Yui Road, a short distance northwest of downtown Ishigaki Island.

Estimated age: 200–300 yearsIt is said that... The way it clings to the concrete wall with such force that it actually damages part of it gives you a real sense of nature's power and is truly awe-inspiring.

Ishigakijima Island TerminalIt is located about a 5-minute drive from there.

Exit the terminal and walk straight along the road on your left.

Go straight through the intersection where City Hall Street intersects. It will be on your left after a short drive.

The Kuniyoshi family’s giant banyan tree is an impressive specimen growing near the city center. Estimated to be 200 to 300 years old, it stands 10 meters tall and has a circumference of 3 meters.

The Ishigaki Garden isOne of the Two-Generation Gardens of the Yaeyama IslandsIt is a garden built by the Ishigaki clan, who were members of the upper class in the Yaeyama region at that time.

Designed by Shiroama Oyagami, a Ryukyuan landscape architect, this garden combines the serene atmosphere of a Japanese garden with the distinctive character of the Yaeyama Islands, featuring rocks made of Ryukyuan coral scattered throughout.

Sakhalin fir (Abies sachalinensis)

Tōrin-ji Temple was founded in 1614 when the Satsuma Domain invaded the Ryukyu Kingdom; it was established after it was pointed out to King Shō Nei that there were no temples or shrines in the Yaeyama Islands.
