Aragusuku Island - Hateruma Muri (Sakishima Islands Hibanzomori)
What is Hateruma Muri (Hibanmori, Sakishima Islands)?
Hateruma Muri was a fire watch post (hiban-mui) established in 1644, during the period of national isolation, by the Ryukyu Royal Court under the control of the Satsuma Domain.
"Hiban-mori" refers to a group of historic lookout posts used to monitor and report on maritime traffic—such as the arrival of foreign ships from China and other regions—at a time when there were no telephones or similar means of communication.
The Sakishima Islands Fire Watch Post is one of 18 posts established across 13 islands in the Sakishima Islands.
Hateruma Muri is located right in the middle of Shimoji Island, making it very difficult to get to.
