Details on the Kuroshima Traditional Performing Arts Center
The Kuroshima Traditional Performing Arts Center is located right in the middle of the Higashi-suji settlement, the heart of Kuroshima.
A monument commemorating the fact that a group of Yaeyama dancers once lived here on Kuroshima stands in front of the Kuroshima Traditional Performing Arts Hall in the Higashi-suji settlement, and a large stone monument marking the site as a place associated with the Kin’ō-ryū school of Yaeyama dance has been erected on the grounds.
The building doesn't actually house any dance-related exhibits; it's a space used for meetings and such, with tables and chairs in the large hall, and it has the atmosphere of a community center.
The monument at the Kuroshima Traditional Performing Arts Center is located on the right-hand side when facing the center. Engraved on this stone monument is the history of the organization’s ownership and operation of facilities such as Kuroshima Marine Village (now closed) and Ishigaki Yaimamura in Ishigaki City.

Monument to the "100 Selected Roads"
The "Japan's Top 100 Roads" monument is located right next to the Kuroshima Traditional Performing Arts Hall. It was erected to commemorate the selection of Prefectural Road 213 (Kuroshima Port Line) as one of Japan's Top 100 Roads by the Ministry of Construction.
Prefectural Road 213 (Kuroshima Port Line) is a prefectural road that runs from Kuroshima Port to the village. In 1986, when it was selected as one of the “Top 100,” it was an unpaved road covered entirely in white sand.
With traditional houses featuring red-tiled roofs and stone walls dotting the landscape, once you pass through the village, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a beautiful rural scene of ranches and pastures.
If you're coming from Kuroshima Port, follow Prefectural Route 213 (Kuroshima Port Line) straight ahead; it's located near the intersection at the end of the road.
It's right next to the Kuroshima Community Center, so it's easy to find.
Renting a bike at Kuroshima Port and taking a leisurely ride while enjoying the quintessential Yaeyama scenery is the perfect way to spend your time.

Kuroshima Post Office

The Kuroshima Post Office is located on the right-hand side as you head west on the Kuroshima Port Prefectural Road after leaving the Kuroshima Traditional Performing Arts Hall.
The Kuroshima Post Office is the only post office on the island, and its red-tiled roof gives the building a typical Yaeyama look.
Like post offices on the mainland, it’s open on weekdays and has an ATM. Since this is the only ATM on the island, be sure to stop by the Kuroshima Post Office if you need to withdraw cash.
Also, since you can get a postmark here that’s unique to Kuroshima, it’s a good idea to pick one up as a souvenir.

Hiejichi Utaki
To get to Hiejichi Utaki from the Kuroshima Traditional Performing Arts Center, exit the center, turn right, and then turn left at the first intersection.
Follow the road, and you'll find it straight ahead at the end.
Hiejichi Utaki was once the archery practice ground of Hiejichi Shuri Oya-ko, a renowned historical figure.
Every year in the eighth month of the lunar calendar, a festival marking the completion of a vow is held, during which traditional performing arts are presented.
It is said that this Hiejichi Shuri Oyako rescued the crew of a three-tan sailboat when it ran aground near the entrance to the Hase reef at Kakinubada in the northeastern part of Kuroshima.
It is said that he was appointed Shuri Ōyako in recognition of this achievement.
After Shuri Ōyako’s death, his descendants built a shrine at the site where he had once practiced archery and worshipped him there.
Since then, people in neighboring villages have also come to worship it, and it is revered as a sacred site.
