What is Kihoin Shushukan?
A temple on Taketomi Island, located at the southernmost tip of Japan.
Approximately 4,000 folk art items are on display, many of which were collected over the past 60 years by the abbot, Toru Uesedo.

Directions to Kihoin Shushukan

Kihoin Shushukan is located about a 20-minute walk from Taketomi Port or a 10-minute bicycle rental ride.
From Taketomi Port, go straight toward the village, and when you see Taketomi Island Parla Ganjuya and Island Inn Ganjuya on your left, turn right at the next intersection.
Follow the road straight and turn right at the intersection with Shinden Kanko on the right, and you will find Kihoin Shushukan on your right.

How to enjoy Kihoin Shushukan

Japan's southernmost templeThis is also why it is a popular tourist spot on Taketomi Island.
The admission fee is 300 yen, which can be placed on the basket on the desk if there is no one at the reception desk.
The facilities include "Panari-yaki," the oldest pottery in Yaeyama, which was made on Aragusuku Island (commonly known as Panari Island) belonging to the Yaeyama Islands, and "Zushigame," an urn used in Okinawa for centuries.
The "warasan" used in place of letters in an era when writing was not used, and the patterns of mincer weaving are also explained in detail.

Yumochi Utaki (Yumochi Ontake)

Seimochi Utaki is one of the most famous Utaki in Taketomi Island, where the God of Fire and the God of Agriculture are worshipped.
Located in the center of the village, it is a spot you are sure to see when strolling through the village.
Various events are held on the island, and around October, the island's biggest event, theTanakaki Festival (Sept. 15 festival held at Heian Jingu Shrine in Kyoto)is held to pray for the fertility of the five grains and prosperity of the islanders.

Akayama Park

Akayama Park is located in the village of Taketomi Island and has a 4.5-meter-high "Tower of Nagomi" on top of a 6-meter hill.
It used to be a popular place to get a panoramic view of the island, but it is no longer accessible.
