Ishigaki Island - ICT Cultural Hall -

石垣島のICT文化ホール

What Is the ICT Cultural Hall?

It's a facility located near the Remote Islands Terminal, right next to the tax office, and you'll pass it on your way from the Remote Islands Terminal to the Yaeyama Museum.

This hall is operated by Ishigaki Cable TV, a community-based cable TV provider.

The third floor is a multipurpose studio hall, which is also used for recording TV programs and other purposes.

The fourth floor is a cultural center where various classes are held.

Since this facility is mainly used by locals, there might not be much to see even if you visit as a tourist (lol).

Directions to the ICT Cultural Hall

It is located about a 28-minute drive from New Ishigaki Airport and about a 7-minute walk from the Remote Islands Terminal.

If you're coming from New Ishigaki Airport
After leaving New Ishigaki Airport, turn left and head south on Route 390.

Cross the Todoroki River, turn right at the sixth T-intersection, and continue on the Miminari Road for a while.

. Turn left at the T-intersection where Route 209 joins, then turn right at the T-intersection after crossing the Miyara River, and turn left immediately afterward.

Continue straight along the road, turn right at the intersection where the goat meat processing and sales facility is on your right, and then turn left at the intersection where Route 87 joins the road.

Follow the road for a while, turn left at the intersection in front of the Bunkan, turn right at the second intersection, and then turn right immediately after that; you’ll find the ICT Cultural Hall on your right.

If you're coming from the Remote Islands Terminal
Exit the Remote Islands Terminal and turn right.

Go past the 730 Monument intersection, turn right at the intersection in front of the post office, and after passing two T-junctions, turn left at the next intersection—it will be on your right.

How to Enjoy Yourself at the ICT Cultural Hall

It also serves as a gathering place for local residents, such as a studio hall and a cultural center. While there isn’t much for tourists to enjoy, local TV shows are often filmed here, so you might even run into a celebrity...!

Details on the ICT Cultural Hall

The ICT Cultural Hall was opened and operated by Ishigaki Cable TV in Tonoshiro on May 23, 2013.

Ishigaki Cable TV, founded in 1977 (Showa 52), was built to mark its 35th anniversary with the aim of promoting cultural development in the Yaeyama Islands.

It was used as a hub for information exchange during the year the new airport opened.

It has become a place used not only by residents but also by many other people.

Each floor of this facility measures 54 tsubo. The first floor is a parking lot; the second floor houses offices; the third floor is a multipurpose studio hall; the fourth floor is a comprehensive cultural center offering a variety of classes for people of all ages; and the fifth floor is a multimedia studio equipped with state-of-the-art music equipment capable of live internet broadcasts and video streaming.

The studio on the third floor can be used for TV broadcasts, lectures, recitals, and dance events, and can accommodate more than 100 people.

It is located in the city center, near the Yaeyama Museum, and within walking distance of the Remote Islands Terminal.

It’s easy to get to, and in the summer, it’s a great spot to take a short break after strolling around the island.

It's nice and cool, so it'll help your overheated body cool down.

Although it is rarely visited by tourists and serves primarily as a gathering place for locals, it is still a spot where tourists can stop by.

It would be nice to take a break and interact with the locals.

Turn left at the first intersection, and you'll find it on your left. It's about a one-minute walk away.

This museum showcases not only historical and cultural artifacts from the Yaeyama Islands—such as archaeological and folklore materials, Yaeyama jofu cloth, and Yaeyama-yaki pottery—but also artistic cultural properties.

It opened in Showa 47, the year Okinawa was returned to Japan, as part of the projects commemorating the return to the motherland.

This is a place where you can learn about the culture and history of the Yaeyama Islands, making your trip there even more fulfilling.

 美崎御嶽
To get to Misaki Mitake from the ICT Cultural Hall, exit the hall, turn left, cross the intersection, and you’ll find it on your left.

Since there are almost no Shinto shrines on Ishigaki Island, Ontake was built as a sacred site dedicated to Okinawan deities in place of a shrine.

Misaki Mikage is a shrine built to pray for safe voyages, and it is often visited by many islanders.

Located near the city center, cars come and go along the main street, but once you enter Misaki Mitake, the hustle and bustle of the city fades away and a peaceful atmosphere takes over.

Large trees line the area near the entrance, creating a sacred atmosphere.

It is a very valuable cultural asset that was designated as a prefectural tangible cultural property in 1956.

Amakawa Utaki, also known as "Amakawa Utaki" or "A-ma-on," is a historic sacred site. According to the *Yaeyama Island Origins Record*, compiled in 1705, its origins are unknown.

According to local folklore in Tonojo Village, a devout farming family who worshipped the sacred stone at Amakawara experienced a bountiful catch, leading them to begin worshipping this site—where the sacred stone is located—as a deity of abundant harvests and bountiful catches, and a sacred shrine was erected there.

This sacred site is also where the village ceremonies of Tonojo Village are held. On Ishigaki Island, there are seven sacred sites (Misaki, Miyatori, Nagasaki, Amakawa, Itokazu, Nagura, and Sakieda) where prayers are offered for the safe voyages of provincial officials and tax-paying ships, and this site is counted among them.
