About the Oya-ke Akahachi Monument
New Ishigaki AirportA bronze statue and a stone monument honoring a local hero, located in the Ohama settlement in the heart of Ishigaki Island’s downtown area.
Oyake Akahachi was a legendary warrior born on Hateruma Island in the late 15th century who later established his power base in Ohama on Ishigaki Island and rose up against the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Oyake Akahachi, who had been renowned as a heroic figure since childhood, took up arms against the Ryukyu government to help farmers suffering from poverty, but he was defeated in battle and lost his life.
Akahachi's actions were portrayed by the government as those of a tyrannical rebel, andHero of the Yaeyama IslandsIt is said that this story has been passed down through the generations.
Directions to the Oyake Akahachi Monument
The Oyake Akahachi Monument is located 15 minutes by bus from the bus terminal, about a 6-minute walk from the Ohama bus stop, about a 16-minute drive from New Ishigaki Airport, and about a 14-minute drive from the Remote Islands Terminal.
① Leave New Ishigaki Airport and head south on National Route 390.
② Follow the road, cross the Miyara Bridge, and continue straight ahead.
③ When you see the Ohama Community Center on your left, turn left and follow the road; you’ll find it on your left.

① Exit the Remote Islands Terminal, turn right, and head east on National Route 390.
② When you see the Ohama Community Center, turn right and go straight; it will be on your left.
How to Enjoy the Oyake Akahachi Monument
Around 1500, Akahachi led the islanders in a rebellion against the Ryukyu king’s ban on religious rituals and suppression of their faith; although he fought valiantly, he was ultimately killed. This battleIt is known as the Oyake Akahachi Rebellion.

Furusto-baru Ruins
The Furusto-baru Ruins areRuins of Oya-ke Akahachi's CastleThis historic site—which is also said to be—features ancient stone walls that once surrounded a residence, as well as ancient tombs and a sacred site. Pottery and ceramics dating from the late 14th century to the early 16th century have been unearthed here.
From the Oyake Akahachi Monument, head out onto National Route 390 and turn left. You’ll see the Marukatsu Soba restaurant; turn right there. Turn left at the end of the road and continue straight—you’ll find it on your right.

Miyara River
The Miyara River is the river with the largest watershed on Ishigaki Island, and from its mouth 1.5 km upstream,A mangrove forest dominated by mangrove trees designated as a Natural Monumentare growing in clusters.
