Ishigaki Island-Hirakubozaki

What is Hirakubozaki?

Japanese harbor porcelain (Phyllostachys nigra var. japonica)

Hirakubozaki is located at the northernmost tip of the Hirakubo Peninsula in the northeast of Ishigaki Island and is home to the Hirakubozaki Lighthouse, a popular tourist attraction.

The view from there offers a breathtaking panorama of “Ishigaki Blue,” with the Pacific Ocean to the right and the East China Sea to the left.

The Hirakubozaki Lighthouse has been certified by the Japan Romanticists Association as a "Lighthouse of Love," a sacred site for romance.

How to Get to Hirakubozaki

Since it is located at the northernmost tip of Ishigaki Island, it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes by car from the city center.

To get there from New Ishigaki Island Airport, head north for about 30 km from National Route 390 onto Prefectural Route 206.

The drive takes about 50 minutes, and since the road offers unobstructed views, you can enjoy a drive with a sense of openness.

It’s a bit of a distance to Hirakubozaki, but the route is very straightforward, so feel free to stop by.

How to Enjoy Hirakubozaki

The best way to enjoy Hirakubozaki is, of course, to take in the view!

There are various activities to enjoy in this area, and you can go swimming and snorkeling at Hirakubo Beach.

However, my top recommendation is the paragliding experience.

Activities on Ishigaki Island that you can only experience here.

There is a shop called ”Sky Adventure U-maku” in a village on the Hirakubo Peninsula, where you can try paragliding. You can enjoy the coral reef-filled ocean as you glide over the sea like a bird.

It's sure to be a memory you'll cherish for a lifetime.

Details of Hirakubozaki

Hirakubozaki, which is also famous as a tourist attraction, features a monument marking the northernmost point and is one of the area’s popular photo spots.

The site of the northernmost monument is a small hill that offers a panoramic view of the Hirakubo Peninsula.

The View from Hirakubozaki

To the right of the lighthouse is Hirakubozaki Beach, where you can enjoy various activities.

Since it's a bit far from the city center, there aren't many tourists, so you can enjoy the activities with plenty of freedom!

Hirakubozaki, which offers views of the crystal-clear ocean, is also famous as a sunset spot; on clear days, you can take your time watching the sun sink below the horizon from the deep-blue sky.

Why not try watching the sunset?

Hirakubozaki Lighthouse
Kanon-zaki is a cape on the west coast of Ishigaki Island, facing Nagura Bay, located at the end of the walking path leading west from Funakura Park.

There is a predominantly white lighthouse on the cape, and from here you can enjoy a view of the crystal-clear, emerald-green sea.

There’s a cave nearby, and once you walk through it, you can see the sunset peeking through the rocks, so be sure to check it out!
