About Funakura Park

Funakura Park is a green space located in the Arakawa area in the southwestern part of Ishigaki Island.

The expansive grounds are covered with grass and feature playground equipment such as a slide.

There is a well-maintained promenade along the coast that extends all the way to Kannonzaki, making it the perfect spot for jogging or taking a walk.

How to Get to Funakura Park

Funakura Park is located about a 15-minute drive from the Ishigaki Port Remote Islands Terminal.

After leaving the Remote Islands Terminal, head northwest along Kannon-dō Line with the ocean on your left, and you'll find it on your left.

It's located across from the park, next to Ishigaki City Makira Elementary School and Hotel Royal Palace, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding it.

Funakura Park, located in Shinkawa, Ishigaki City, is a well-maintained park beloved by locals for its beautiful lawns.

This park overlooks the ocean, and on clear days, you can see Taketomi Island to the west.

During the day, it's a park with a very peaceful atmosphere where children run around and lie down.

The view is wide open, allowing you to fully enjoy the beautiful scenery, and you can also see Taketomi Island across the sea, with its gradient-like colors.

Recommended Sightseeing Spots Near Funakura Park

Kannonzaki

Kanon-zaki is a cape on the west coast of Ishigaki Island, facing Nagura Bay, located at the end of the walking path leading west from Funakura Park.

There is a predominantly white lighthouse on the cape, and from here you can enjoy a view of the crystal-clear, emerald-green sea.

There’s a cave nearby, and once you walk through it, you can see the sunset peeking through the rocks, so be sure to check it out!

Gushiken Youtaka Memorial Hall

A memorial hall has been built on Ishigaki Island, Mr. Gushiken’s hometown, to honor the legendary boxer’s remarkable achievement of successfully defending his WBA Junior Flyweight World Championship title 13 times in a row.

The museum displays gloves, championship belts, trophies, and other items actually used in matches, and videos documenting title defense matches are shown continuously.

Tomizaki Kannondo

Tomizaki Kannon-do is a historic temple where a Kannon statue—which watches over maritime safety and good health—is enshrined, and it has been a place of worship for local residents for many years.

This is the most popular spot on Ishigaki Island during New Year’s Eve countdowns and the first shrine visit of the year.

It is known as the No. 1 spot for New Year’s visits to shrines, attracting such long lines that they stretch for miles.
