About Kuroshima Clinic

Kuroshima is called “Heart Island” because the island is shaped like a heart. It is also known as “Cow Island” because it has more cows than people. The Kuroshima Clinic is the only medical facility on the island. The clinic serves as the islanders’ primary care provider, offering community-based medical care. That said, it does accept walk-in patients, so please stop by if you have a medical emergency while visiting Kuroshima.

Directions to Kuroshima Clinic

The Kuroshima Clinic is located about a 36-minute walk or a 7-minute drive from Kuroshima Port.
Leave Kuroshima Port and head toward the village along Prefectural Route 213. Follow the road for a while, then turn right at the intersection with the “100 Selected Roads” monument. Turn left at the end of the road, then turn right immediately. Continue along the road, and you’ll find it on your left.

Kuroshima Clinic is a medical facility, not a place for recreation. Since it is an important clinic for the island’s residents, please take care of your health during your trip to avoid getting sick before you visit. Kuroshima is a sparsely populated island, and the lack of a resident physician had long been a cause for concern. The Kuroshima Clinic was the first medical facility established to address such issues.
The Kuroshima Clinic is a very well-maintained, new building located near the post office in the Higashisuji settlement. Since Kuroshima has neither an airport nor a port, it’s not easy to travel to and from other islands. However, a doctor is always on duty at the Kuroshima Clinic, so please feel free to visit if you suffer an injury or sudden illness while sightseeing or participating in activities.

Kuroshima Post Office

The Kuroshima Post Office is the only post office on Kuroshima and is located right next to the Kuroshima Clinic. Situated in the Higashisuji settlement—just past Kuroshima Port along the Kuroshima Port Prefectural Road—this post office is characterized by its red-tiled roof, a hallmark of the Yaeyama Islands. Like post offices on the mainland, it is open on weekdays and has an ATM. Since it is the only financial institution on the island, please use this ATM if you forgot to withdraw cash.
Since Kuroshima has its own unique postmark, it’s a great idea to send a postcard or letter from there as a souvenir.

Monument to the "100 Selected Roads"

The “100 Best Roads in Japan” monument was erected to commemorate the selection of Prefectural Road 213 (Kuroshima Port Line) as one of Japan’s “100 Best Roads.” It is located on the right-hand side of Route 213, next to the Kuroshima Community Center.
In 1986, when it was selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Roads, it was an unpaved road covered entirely in white sand; once you pass through the village, a rural landscape of ranches and pastures unfolds. It was selected for its beautiful scenery.

Kuroshima Observatory

The Kuroshima Observation Deck is located roughly in the center of Kuroshima, next to the Kuroshima Elementary and Junior High School. It’s very easy to spot because it really stands out.
The Kuroshima Observation Deck has a swirling shape, allowing visitors to take in the surrounding views as they climb. Although it is not particularly tall—standing at 10 meters—the flat terrain of Kuroshima allows for a panoramic view of the entire island. On clear days, you can also see Iriomote Island, Taketomi Island, and Ishigaki Island across the sea.
